Victims' Survey
The Victims of Crime Commissioner has released an anonymous survey to ask victims of crime in Victoria about their experiences of the justice system.
What does the survey aim to find out?
- The Victims of Crime Commissioner wants to understand victim experiences of the justice system and how well agencies follow the Victims' Charter Act 2006 (Victims’ Charter).
- Agencies that investigate crime, agencies that take cases to court and agencies that support victims of crime (collectively described as prescribed agencies) must follow the Victims’ Charter.
- The Victims' Survey will ask people who have been a victim of crime about their experiences with these agencies and general experiences of participation in the justice and victims’ services system.
Participating in this survey will help the Commissioner drive improvements to the justice system through advocating to government about victim experiences. Findings from the survey will inform the Commissioner’s next Annual Report, including how well prescribed agencies followed the Victims' Charter during the year.
What will the survey cover?
The survey will ask:
- Questions about the crime you or your family member experienced
- General questions about your experiences of the justice system and how you were treated by agencies
- A set of focused questions relating to whether specific Charter principles were upheld. For 2026, this includes:
- Treatment of people adversely affected by crime (Principles 6 & 7A)
- Information, referral and communication (Principles 7 & 7B)
- Protecting victims’ privacy (Principle 14)
- Demographic questions about you or your family member
Next year a set of focused questions will be asked about different Charter principles.
For more detail about the 2026 survey principles, please refer to the Victims' Charter Act 2006 or this summary document.
How can I be involved?
The Commissioner wants to hear from victims of crime or their family members in Victoria who:
- Reported a crime between 1 July 2025 and 30 June 2026, or
- Used a Victorian victim support service between 1 July 2025 and 30 June 2026.
